Kingston resident Norval B. Hockman Jr, age 81, passed away on Friday, January 29th, 2021 after a battle with pneumonia. His wife was at his side, as he left her arms into the embrace of our Lord. Norval was born September 20th, 1939 to parents Norval B. Hockman Sr, and Marian Hockman. After graduating from Roane County High School in 1958, he spent 4 years as a Hydraulicsman in the Navy. He was stationed mostly in Washington, D.C., where he also worked in Valet parking for “The Mayflower Hotel”, parking cars of many visiting dignitaries. After finishing his shift with the Navy, he and the several other ensigns he had recruited would show up to work at the famous hotel wearing bib overalls. Eventually someone complained about the attire of the valet crew. When his supervisor approached him, he said if they wanted them to dress a specific way the hotel should provide them with uniforms. In a few weeks, they all were provided uniforms. He was a voice for himself and others, especially those he felt were being treated unfairly. Norval worked for Lockheed Martin Energy Systems at the Oak Ridge K-25 site as a Welder and Planner, retiring after 29 years of service. He was an avid hunter, classic car enthusiast, and wine maker. He had a knack for fixing things and making them work much more efficiently. His family and friends would often say of things he had improved, that it had been “norvalized”. Norval married his wife, Theresa, in 1981. She brought into his life a menagerie of pets including ferrets, dogs, cats, birds and horses. She introduced him into her loving family, showing him what family life should be. He loved his family and loved being at home. He will be missed by his neighborhood. He was always available with his tractor, welder, and knowledge to help them however he could when they needed. He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by:
Loving wife of 39 years: Theresa Jean Hockman
Brother-in-law: David Jean (Vickie) of Harriman, TN
Sister-in-law: Linda White of Ormond Beach, FL
Several nieces: Christina Grabowski (Eddie), Angela Braid (Todd), Michelle Dodson (Scott), Lauren Jean and nephew, Ryan Jean
And several great nieces who loved their uncle dearly.
He will be missed by his family, neighbors, and the many “special friends” he made throughout his life (You know who you are) and especially missed by his couch buddies, his dogs “Squirt” & “Stick” and his sidekick, “Buddy”.
Due to covid-19 there will be no funeral service at this time. Evans Mortuary in Rockwood is serving the family of Mr. Norval B. Hockman Jr. An online registry is available at evansmortuary.biz and the family asks that memorial contributions be made in his name to the Roane County Animal Shleter.
