Marjorie Smith Hicks, formerly of Rockwood, TN, died peacefully at Westminster Manor in Bradenton, Florida. Having been born in St. Petersburg, Florida on February 19, 1921, she had reached the age of 102. She was the daughter of Jessie Lynch Smith and David Lipscomb Smith who preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her twin brother Dr. James F. Smith, her son Robert S. Hicks, Jr., her daughter-in-law Phyllis Branscomb Hicks, and her husband Dr. Robert S. Hicks, Sr. to whom she was married for 62 years.
She was a member and volunteer to many civic organizations including past-president of the PTA, member and volunteer at Dulin Gallery of Art in Knoxville, volunteer at the Michael Dunn Center of Kingston, Girl Scouts volunteer, a pink lady volunteer at Fort Sanders Hospital in Knoxville, chairman of the women’s division of the Rockwood Centennial Celebration, member of the Rockwood Garden, Study, Bridge and Sewing Clubs.
In the 1960’s she also did modeling in department stores in Knoxville and Oak Ridge. Plus, she studied violin at the Cadek Conservatory with Jerri Cadek Lucktenburg of New York City and William Starr, concertmaster of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.
She is formerly a member of the Rockwood Church of Christ where she taught bible classes for many years. She was also a member of the Kingston (TN) Church of Christ and, later, the 53rd Ave Church of Christ in Bradenton, Florida.
Through the years, she was fortunate to travel to many countries including Russia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Egypt, Israel, Mexico, Canada, China, Japan, Thailand, all of the United Kingdom and all of Europe.
She is survived by three grandchildren: Sally Hicks (Frank) Peppitoni of Bradenton, Florida, Stephanie Hicks (Dan) Walter of Seymour, Tennessee, David Russell Hicks (wife Heather) of Dallas, Texas; two great-grandchildren: Caleb Hicks and Tristan Walter, and a niece, Melissa Signor of Kingston, New York, as well as extended family.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Oak Grove Cemetery.
