Dorothy (Dottie) Burke was born and raised in Weymouth, MA. She passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 3 at home in Rockwood, TN. She graduated from South Weymouth High School and held a number of administrative and secretarial jobs there before marrying John McMaster and becoming a housewife and mother of her three children. She later returned to the workforce as a medical secretary and a substitute teacher. Among her more interesting jobs was serving on the “crew” of the family lobster boat.
Dottie was always willing to sacrifice to help others, she had a kind heart and a giving spirit. She loved animals, always had more than one dog and cat, and even alpacas at one time. Her hobbies were arts and crafts and she even crocheted lace doilies, which usually became unique gifts cherished by many. She learned to make sourdough bread which became a gift to many as well. She always referred to herself as just a simple woman, but her interests and talents ran much deeper than she humbly told. She was outgoing and rarely met a stranger, she loved to talk, and her Boston accent entertained many southerners.
Dottie had remarried Michael Bundrick and continued living in Ware, MA before moving to Tennessee in 2015 . Among the things that drew her to East TN were the mountains, natural beauty and lower cost of living. She and Michael enjoyed boating, fishing and motorcycle riding and just relaxing on their property until his sudden death in 2017.
In 2022 she remarried Phillip (Phil) Newman of Rockwood, a widower of Anna Hayes Newman, who had passed away from covid. They found senior re-marriage exciting and adventurous. They liked checking off the bucket list together as Dottie wanted to fly in a helicopter, and did, and milk a cow, which she did. They also took up RV camping and loved day trips as well as local fairs and festivals . They loved cooking together and blended northern and southern culture in the kitchen.
Her main charitable favorite was serving at the Rockwood Ministerial Association Food Pantry and Loves Kitchen. After she joined First Christian Church and was married there to Phillip, she was re-baptized and they became servants as deacons as well. She considered all of her service to others a loving ministry.
Dorothy was pre-deceased by her parents, Walter and Grace Burke, and her sister, Margaret Sprague,
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Phillip H. Newman, her 3 children, John (Jackie)
McMaster, Christina Satterlund ( Carl ), and Jenny Varraso ( Joe ), and 3 grandchildren, Carl
(C.J.) and Joseph Satterlund and Isabella Varraso, two sisters, Catherine McMaster and Elizabeth Trinchera, and two of her special cousins in Florida, Brian Burke (Lara) and James (Butch) Burke.
Dorothy considered all of her fellow Food Pantry board members and volunteers and her church congregation surviving family as well.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you send memorial contributions to The Rockwood Ministerial Association (Food Pantry), First Christian Church, Rockwood, or to your local animal rescue or shelter in memory of Dottie.
Following cremation, a memorial service and celebration of life will be held at Evans Mortuary in Rockwood, Tennessee on Sunday, November 24.
