Barbara Jean Hammitt, age 81 of Rockwood, formerly of West Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. She was born on July 23, 1943, in Yaeger, WV. She attended church at First Baptist Church in Rockwood. She served on their Joy Fellowship team and loved to be with her church family. She was an avid shopper, and loved to take her family with her. Her dogs have meant the world to her over the years. She retired from her job as Deputy Tax Assessor in the McDowell County government system. Throughout her career, she was extremely passionate about her job and politics. She attended many rallies and was proud to petition for what she believed in. She is preceded in death by her parents: Lee Marshall & Stella Curry Marshall; her husband: John E. Hammitt; aunt: Donna Layman; and grandson: Raymond Smith Jr. She is survived by:
Children: David Lester and Carolyn Smith
Grandchildren: David Douglas Lester, Carla Denise Ray, Ryan Smith, Bryan Smith, Justin Smith, Allie Simpkins, and Jordan Simpkins
Several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren
Brother: Thomas Wayne Smith
and a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, from 6:00-8:00 pm at Evans Mortuary in Rockwood, TN. Funeral service will follow at 8:00 pm ET with Bro. Jeff Ogg officiating. Graveside and interment service will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 12:00 pm ET in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, West Virginia. Evans Mortuary is serving the family of Mrs. Barbara Jean Hammitt.
