Mr. Wiley Ray Martin, Jr., age 90, a resident of Rockwood, Tennessee passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014 in the Methodist Medical Center, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He was born November 24, 1923 in Rockwood, Tennessee to Wiley Ray Martin, Sr. and Ruth Lou Grace Pratt Martin. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rockwood where he served as the Sunday School Class Secretary for 23 years. Mr. Martin was a retired Engineer Aide II with the State of Tennessee Department of Transportation from October 11, 1945 – 1985. He began his service with Rockwood Fire Department when he volunteered as a Firefighter on December 23, 1945. He continued to serve with Rockwood Fire Department as Firefighter, Captain, Fire Chief in 1976, and currently a Battalion Chief over the Volunteers. He also served with the Civil Air Patrol for 30 years; and as Commander with the Ground Observation Corps. Mr. Martin was a Sergeant with the U.S. Army Air Force Veteran during WWII, serving overseas with the 384th Bomb Co., 8th Air Force with B-17 aircraft. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal (Army Air Force), and the European –Eastern Theater Ribbon with 1 Bronze Service Star. He served 1942-1945. After being honorably discharged from the military, he re-enrolled in Rockwood High School to finish his High School education, and became part of the Rockwood High School Football Team for 2 years. After graduation, he continued to be a part of the football games by carrying the Down Marker for 35 years. He also worked all of the J.C. Bowl Games for 20 years. Mr. Martin was member of the American Legion Post #50 in Rockwood from December 23, 1945 until the present; served as Commander in 1976; and Sergeant-At-Arms for 40 over 40 years. He was a Charter Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4782 in Rockwood, and serve as Sergeant-At-Arms for over 15 years. He served for many years as a very active member of the Roane County Military Memorial Honor Guard. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias in Rockwood. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Novella Underwood Martin; granddaughter, Wendy Martin; sister, Nancy McIntosh; and brothers, William Martin and Edgar Martin.

The family will receive friends Thursday, March 20, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Evans Mortuary. Funeral services will follow on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Evans Mortuary with Rev. Charles Kelley officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held Friday, March 21, 2014 at 12:00 noon in the Roane Memorial Gardens in Rockwood with honors by the Rockwood Fire Department, the Roane County Military Memorial Honor Guard, and the Tennessee Army National Guard.
