Vernon Cooper passed away at his home in Clarksville, TN surrounded by his family on Friday, January 24, 2014. Mr. Cooper was born in Rockwood to the late Zirkle and Ellen Sanborn Cooper. He served in the U.S. Air Force before beginning a long and distinguished career as an educator. He taught biology at Powell High School in Knoxville, TN before moving to Clarksville where he made his home until his death. He taught biology at Clarksville High School then after receiving his Master’s Degree, he served as Assistant Principal and Guidance Counselor at Northwest High School. Mr. Cooper was Principal at Barksdale Elementary School from 1983 until 1992. He retired from Clarksville High School after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Ditmore Cooper, and his granddaughter Sarah Sharpe. He is survived by his sons, Brad (Tracy) of Clarksville and their children Riley, Ford, Eliza and Brady; Chad (Wendy) of Orlando, FL and their son Jonas; his daughter, Katy Sharpe (Tim); brother, Richard Cooper (Nancy) of Knoxville and their sons Butler and Ben; sister, Gayle Bosma (Mel) of Philadelphia, PA, and their daughters, Lori Gordon and Amy Decatur.
A service of death and resurrection was held for Mr. Cooper on Thursday, January 30th at the Madison Street United Methodist Church in Clarksville.
