Eddie Jean Scott Simmons, 86 of Houston, passed away May 26, 2015.
Daughter of Edward Montgomery Scott and Irene Swing Clifton, she was born on a rainy November 19, 1928. As she says, “I was born on the mountain at Westel, Cumberland County, TN.” She grew up with two older brothers, George and William E. Clifton. The Westel community consisted of a Baptist Church, Grammar school (two rooms), post office, two grocery stores (1 with cafe and tourist court), a saw mill and fifty or so families. Piney Creek (our swimming pool) divides Roane and Cumberland Counties. She lived five miles from the nearest town of Rockwood, however was bussed to Cumberland County High School in Crossville, eighteen miles away, not including side road travel. Her great-grandmother, Elizabeth Jane Dean Lingo, was an early land owner and gave each of her children a farm. Her only child, Shelia Gayle Kirkland Greene, also grew up in TN, where they farmed until Gayle became of high school age. She was office manager of Morris Homes Inc., Rockwood branch when they moved to town. In 1964 she came to Houston to live, her mother, having moved here eighteen years before, so she was a Texan by choice. While working as a crew schedule clerk for Texas Int’l Airlines, she met her husband, Lee B. Simmons, a retired TI captain, at a company party and they were married in 1968. They were both real estate brokers and operated Christmas Realty Company on Bayshore Blvd. in Friendswood in which they founded in 1973. She later retired from Eckerd’s/CVS drugstore in late 1980s after leaving the real estate business.
Eddie was a graduate of Cumberland HS, Crossville, TN, Durham Business College, and San Jacinto College in real estate.
Eddie’s hobbies included genealogy, travel, and flower gardening. She was a member of the National Genealogical Society, book store owner/genealogy, Charter Member and Officer of Captain Gilbreth Falls Absolom Hooper National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Friendswood, Texas, charter member of Harris County Genealogical Society, member of Oran M. Roberts Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy, Jan Long Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, American Legion Auxiliary, Houston Board of Realtor, Texas State Board of Realtor, National Board of Realtor, and Council of Realtor.
Eddie is survived by her daughter Gayle; brothers Jim, Joe, John, and sister Jane Scott; grandson Thomas Scott Greene and wife Gloria, and their children, JR, Katherine Elizabeth, Thomas Martin (Marty),grandchildren Jaxson Thomas, and Brandy Faye; grandson Timothy Lee Greene and wife Tracy, and their children, Austin Lee, Ashlyn Elizabeth, and Lauren Ann.
The service celebrating Eddie’s life will be held at 4:00pm Saturday, May 30th, at Niday Funeral Home – Beamer Chapel, with visitation one hour prior to the service. On Tuesday, June 2, 2015, in Rockwood, Tennessee, Family will receive Friends from 1:00pm to 2:00pm in the Chapel of Evans Mortuary. Funeral will Follow at 2:00pm with Rev Charles Kelley, officiating. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery following the Funeral. Evans Mortuary of Rockwood is serving the Simmons Family with Final and Tennessee arrangements. Niday Funeral Home of Houston, Texas served the family in Texas.
