Mr. Marvin Joseph Smith, age 89 of Elkin, N.C. (formerly of Rockwood) passed away at Elkin Healthcare Center of Elkin, N.C. on Monday, September 16, 2013. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Crossville, Tennessee. Mr. Smith was a World War II U. S. Navy Veteran who served his Country in the South Pacific and Japan. Marvin received his pharmacy degree from The University of Tennessee, Memphis in the spring of 1952 on the G.I. Bill. He practiced Pharmacy in the Roane County Area all his career. He worked at Chase Pharmacy in Harriman from 1952 until 1955 and then he managed Kinser Drugs in Kingston where those who entered were greeted not as paying customers, but as friends and guest. It is noted he served his community and was well loved by all who knew him. Marvin was the sixth child born to Clinton Randall Smith and Susie Josephine Miller Smith. He was married June 17, 1951 for 62 wonderful years to Betty Jean Adwell Smith. They have 2 children: Jeannie Smith Tate of Lenoir, N.C., Carol Smith Crabtree (James) of Tennessee; 3 Grandchildren: Lesley Tate Sanders (Douglas) of Lenoir, N.C., Joseph Benjamin Tate (Spring) currently stationed with the Air Force in Seaside, CA, Donald David Andrew Tate of Lenoir, N. C.; 9 Great-Grandchildren: Ivy, Prayer, Owen, Jacob, Scarlett of Lenoir, N.C.; Andy, Curtis, Aaden, Daniel of Seaside, CA. Marvin’s Family knew him to be a loving, compassionate, and generous husband and father, who enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family and sharing the fruits of his gardening efforts with others. His passing will leave a void which will be filled only when they join him at Jesus’ feet.
Funeral and Visitation arrangements are as follows: Visitation will be held on Friday, September 20, 2013 at Evans Mortuary in Rockwood, Tennessee from 12:00 noon to 2:00pm. Funeral will follow at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Evans Mortuary with the Rev. David Wilkerson, officiating. Concluding Services and Interment including Full-Military Honors by the Roane County Military Memorial Honor Guard and U. S. Navy will be conducted at Roane Memorial Gardens in Rockwood, Tennessee. Evans Mortuary of Rockwood, Tennessee is serving the Family of Mr. Marvin Joseph Smith.
