Mr. Franklin Delano Long, 82 years young, a resident of Cleveland, Tennessee, formerly of Rockwood, Tennessee entered into rest on January 15, 2016. He was a member of and baptized at White Oak Baptist Church and continued to be our Lords soldier and humble servant. He is a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and an uncle to many and now only in Spirit. He was born November 23, 1933 to Bart and Lillian Majors Long in Rockwood, Tennessee. He was known to family and friends as Gaither. He grew up in a large family where he worked in the fields with his father and also would help his mother with his brothers and sisters. He joined the Army in 1952. He was sent to Germany through 1960. After returning to the states, he was sent to Vietnam August 5, 1965 – July 4, 1966, then again June 22, 1967 – June 21, 1968 and a final tour April 15, 1969 – April 3, 1970. He also spent time in Indochina. While in the service, he received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal with OLC Driver Badge with Bar, the Vietnam Service Medals with Silver and Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Devices, 5 Overseas Service Bars, a Meritorious Unit Citation (2 awards), the Valorous Unit Award, Expert Badge (M-14) Sharpshooter Badge (45). He retired with over 20 years of service with an Honorable Discharge in September 1973. He continued to work hard at several jobs that he enjoyed, the last being at Reinsman where he enjoyed making bridle bits for horses. He worked up through 6 weeks of chemo when he had Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. My father gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. All of his cancers were directly related to Agent Orange. It was a slow process but it is what ultimately sent him home to be with our Heavenly Father. He is preceded in death by Bart Long; Lillian Majors Long; Hellen E. Long; George E. Long; Jessie W. Long “Nig”; Carolyn Jo Long “Susie”; James H. Long “Buster”.

4 Step Grandchildren: Amber, Alex, Seth, Anna

Family and friends will meet on Monday, January 18, 2016 at 2:00 pm in Roane Memorial Gardens, 1400 N. Gateway Avenue, Rockwood, Tennessee for graveside services and interment with full military honors by the Tennessee Army National Guard and the Roane County Military Memorial Honor Guard. “Thank you Lord for all the memories and love that was shared with him here and looking forward to the new ones we will make throughout eternity.
