Mr. Floyd Ernest Hutcherson, age 88, of Rockwood, went to be with his Lord on the 4th day of March, 2015. He was a member of First Christian Church (DOC) since the early thirties where he served as Deacon, chaired various committees and took an active role until the mid-sixties. He lived an honest clean adult life, not smoking, drinking or cursing. He served in the U. S. Army in World War II as a Sergeant in Combat infantry with the 9th Division and participated in the Battle of the Remagan Bridgehead at the Rhine River in Germany and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. After the war he attended the University of Tennessee and graduated with a Juris Doctor degree in law and then practiced law for 60 years in Rockwood.
He was known as a classic car collector, was active in Roane County politics and managed campaigns for John F. Kennedy, Estes Kefauver and Al Gore, Sr. in the early 60’s. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 50, Rockwood Civitan Club, the Walden Ridge Car Club, Tennessee Bar Association, Roane County Bar Association, and American Trial Lawyers. He enjoyed the Big Band Era music especially Glenn Miller’s Orchestra and attended concerts and big band dances whenever possible.
Mr. Hutcherson was preceded in death by his Mother, Gertrude Erwin Hutcherson, Father, Ernest Hutcherson, and Stepmother, Willis Reed Hutcherson.
He was married to Melba Cole Hutcherson who became his secretary and worked in his law office 46 years.
Survivors include his wife, Melba, of 56 years, son, Jeffrey Cole Hutcherson and daughter-in-law, Mollie Lay Hutcherson, of Rockwood, daughter, Heidi Hutcherson Buxton and son-in-law, George H. Buxton, III, of Knoxville, two granddaughters, Betsy Lea Buxton Nashville, TN, and Sarah Ann Buxton, Tuscaloosa, AL, brother Don Hutcherson and sister-in-law, Gloria B. Hutcherson, of Long Island, New York, and many special nieces, nephews and friends.
Arrangements are as Follows: The family will receive friends on Saturday March 7, 2015 from 4:00pm to 5:30pm at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 328 West Rockwood Street downtown Rockwood, Funeral will Follow at 5:30pm with Rev. Kara Foster, Officiating. Concluding Services and Interment will be held on Sunday afternoon, March 8, 2015 at 2:00pm in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Rockwood with Full-Military Honors presented by the U. S. Army Honors and the Roane County Military Memorial Honor Guard. Any donations or special contributions may be made to First Christian Church, Rockwood, Tennessee.
