Jerry Stephen (Steve) Clayton, 61, of Santa Maria, CA went with Jesus on May 6, 2017, after battling cancer for almost two years. Steve was born in Denver, Colorado, February 1, 1956. He grew up in the Lompoc Valley. He graduated from Cabrillo High School, Lompoc CA in 1974 and California State University, Chico earning a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1983. He retired as a Correctional Counselor II from the California Department of Corrections, California Men’s Colony San Luis Obispo CA, in 2009 after 25 years of dedicated service. Upon his retirement he lived his faith and showed his love for God by his example, through his family, community and his church, dedicating his time to serving others. He volunteered as a coach for the freshmen baseball team at St. Joseph High School, worked in the store at Catholic Charities and delivered food for the Food Bank of Santa Maria, CA. He was diagnosed with cancer (Sarcoma) in late 2015, and continued his service until he could no longer. His selfless and kind spirit was recognized by all.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Cindy Bubba Clayton and son Zach and daughter-in-law Marissa Clayton of Eugene, OR; Parents Jerry and Doris Clayton of Rockwood, TN; brother Greg (Charlene) Clayton of Atascadero, CA, nieces Crystal (Dane) Smith of Fallbrook, CA and Brittany (Brandon) McGill of Templeton, CA, nephew Cayce Clayton, of Los Angeles, CA; brother Ken (Tomi) Clayton of Acton, MA, nieces Cassidy Clayton, of Richmond, VA and Christie Clayton of Acton, MA, nephew Kevin Clayton of Boston, MA; brother Scott Clayton of Indianapolis, IN, nieces Ashley Clayton and Alyssa Clayton of Indianapolis, IN and Amanda Clayton of Regina, Canada; additional nieces and nephews include Colleen Bubba and Dominic Bubba of Fair Oaks, CA. He is preceded in death by his Grandparents, Clarence and Nell Nelson, and Cayce and Florence Clayton of Rockwood TN.
Steve was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. He touched so many, and had a caring heart for everyone. He will be missed and never forgotten. Services will be held at St. Louis de Montfort Church in Orcutt, CA. A Rosary will be held on Thursday, 29 June 2017 at 5:30pm, and a Mass on Friday, 30 Jun 2017, beginning at 1:00pm, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, Steve requested donations made to either Catholic Charities of Santa Maria; Santa Barbara County Food Bank of Santa Maria; or the Mission Hope Cancer Center of Santa Maria, CA.
